Swan's Song

Her mother, Teruko, is also very upset by the news of the discovery of her body, causing deep emotional wounds. The incident was featured on a variety show, and the mother and daughter, who couldn't stand the curiosity of the world, moved to a quiet country town far from the city. Although they started a new life, Teruko is bullied by a mysterious mad woman and Mina is bullied at school. And a mysterious murder case occurs again around them.

Abduction

The film opens with kidnappers of a corporate executive making an unusual ransom demand: that a wizened executive from another company haul large bags of money through downtown Tokyo as the media documents his every move. When the first old man almost dies from exhaustion, a second, and eventually a third elderly corporate fat cat is ordered to do the same. The police detective assigned to the case (Tetsuya Watari) and his younger partner (Masatoshi Nagase) are livid with indignation at this sorry spectacle. They learn that these four men were involved in a massive industrial spill that poisoned an entire rural hamlet 20 years previous. Suddenly, the detective -- who studied in the States and apparently absorbed some John Wayne-like mannerisms in the process -- isn't sure who are the victims and who are the villains.

Homesick

An old man, Nakamura, is driving back to his hometown in Hokkaido alone, and on his way, he meets a young girl named Akemi, who has been deserted by her boyfriend after a quarrel over a trivial matter. It is as if they are wandering around the world which has come to an end, but the two get to know each other as slowly as Nakamura's car is going. They come to meet a middle aged lady, Shizuko, who is running away with a large sum of money, and an ex-cop, Goh, who repeatedly attempts suicide, and they spend a night together - Homesick is a road movie set in late autumn in Hokkaido, and it illustrates people's homesickness with black humour.

One Bowl of Kakesoba

Set in Sapporo during the oil crisis of the early '70s, the film centers on the Hokkaitei soba stand run by a stoic patriarch and his perky wife. One New Year's day, a haggard-looking mother and her two adorable moppets poke their heads into the restaurant and ask for a single bowl of kakesoba. Noticing that the trio is looking a little low in the heels, she puts in an extra scoop of noodles. The youngest boy declares that the soba is delicious. The next year, the same threesome appears again asking for one bowl of kakesoba. This time the old man dumps in two helpings. He is struck by how much the youngest looks like their own son who was hit by a truck three years previous. The following year, the three return and this time the mother tells her story...

Kichiku

Made-for-TV film adaptation of the 1957 novel by Seicho Matsumoto starring Takeshi Kitano and directed by Noboru Tanaka. The novel was previously adapted in 1978 film entitled “The Demon” starring Ken Ogata and directed by Yoshitaro Nomura. After a married man stops providing for his mistress, she abandons their three young children with him and his wrathful wife. Consumed by the jealousy and power struggles of their own relationships, they involve the children in their own games - with tragic results.

The New Morning of Billy the Kid

All the protagonists move about in a Tokyo Bar that has an entire wall taken up with a black-and-white reproduction of a photo of Monument Valley. The action starts as Billy the Kid, in full living color, walks out of the photo and gets a job as a waiter. Along with him on the working staff are a samurai straight out of the history books, a G.I. from World War II, and several other anachronistic characters. The plot (as such) revolves around keeping away the brutal mobsters and thugs who dominate the city streets outside of the bar, making the tavern safe for its easily recognized facsimiles of well-known characters.
