Žalobníci

The young generation is not very at peace with the morality of their parents. In a story set in a Moravian village, the otherwise contented cooperators indulge in stealing from the common property without seeing anything wrong with such actions. After being reprimanded by their own children, they first get angry but then become ashamed. The result is a late agitational comedy that no longer deals with the peasants' entry into the agricultural cooperative, but with the mores prevailing there. The ideologically mature youth act as a guarantee of a happy future.

Kuba and Amálka love each other, but Kuba doesn't want to get married yet, which makes Amálka a little sad. When Kuba learns from her that their pear tree is producing pears with long ears, he immediately gets an idea on how to make money from them. From that moment on, a real mess begins. Amálka does break the spell on the long-eared hunter when she gives him a real kiss, thinking it's Kuba. But then Kuba lets the cuckold princess taste the magic apple. Amálka is angry with Kuba and who knows if she'll help him this time. But - what if the cuckold princess really had Kuba's head cut off, as she threatens, and Amálka would lose her groom?

The 50th anniversary of the Barrandov studios was celebrated with a spectacular show: many directors and other important people gathered in the expensive decorations of the Variety Theatre auditorium (built for the Circus Humberto series). They smiled and showed well-deserved relaxation after a job well done in managing socialist cinema. Vladimir Sís interspersed this with excerpts from films, mainly his own and also a little of others who had worked on the "Hill of Dreams".

I'll Be Good, Old Man!

To the intolerant and bloody-minded Prague actor Bergner (Milos Kopecký) is the lead in Moliere's Misanthrope which he is studying now as tailor-made. On top of that he is malicious and he advises to the new actress Helenka (Dagmar Havlová) in such a way that she upsets the theatre director. If Bergner accuses somebody of a mischief and he is wrong, he never apologizes. When he almost crashes an older elegant lady by his car on the zebra crossing, instead of an apology he calls her an old ballet dancer... But in Brno's TV he takes part in a discussion on manners and he gives himself as an example of good manners and grace. In the train he meets a magic old man (Ladislav Pesek) who warns him and admonishes him to change his behavior. After he arrives to Prague the old man's threat comes true.

Three veterans

Three retired soldiers - veterans who wander the world - receive magical gifts from elves - a bottomless bag of gold coins, a hat for any wish, and a harp for conjuring giants. The soldiers, thus gifted, set off for a kingdom that is a bit strange. King Pikola lives there with his daughter Bosana, with whom Bimbác falls in love. Bosana is not only beautiful, but also treacherous and gradually deprives the soldiers of all their gifts and has them banished...

A Face in the Window

A movie built up of three stories about life in a small Slovak town. The Prosecutor: the district attorney is a jazz orchestra soloist at the same time and that is much disliked by the local provincial society. The Defender: is about a young doctor's relation to his patient, who is open about his reactionary opinions. The Judge: it is only after long years that the old judge realizes that his own marriage is in jeopardy.

Transport from Paradise

Czechoslovakian Zbynek Brynych directs this psychological drama set in World War II Terezin ghetto. A dark, visual portrayal of the trials and tribulations the Theresienstadt people faced on a daily basis presented in a series of memorable stories. Their hopes and dreams unfold against the perpetual threat of deportation (or worse) by the Nazis. Based on the novel "Night and Hope" by Arnost Lustig.

The Black Dynasty

The family is connected with Prague's "Kolbenka", the ČKD locomotive factory. Grandfather Antonín, already retired, son Rudolf, a master in the locomotive assembly section and grandson Antonín, a promising football player. The film also tells the story of Rudolf's daughter Vera - each generation has its own ideas about life and cannot identify with the others. The film is linked by retrospective sequences from the lives of Antonín the Elder and Rudolf, especially from the war years. It is a realistic take on working-class life, unencumbered by ideology (despite the opening dedication), featuring well-known and time-tested actors in mainly male roles.

Playing with the Devil

Two marriageable girls, Princess Disperanda and her maid Káča, sign a betrothal with their own blood in exchange for fairy-tale grooms. Although both devilish betrothals accidentally fall into the hands of the brave retired soldier Martin Kabát, the cunning devil Solfernus takes possession of them through cunning, and Martin has no choice but to go to the burning hell.

Kaštanka

A skilled dog is taken in by a circus artist who teaches him various tricks. During a performance, his original owners notice him and his career ends.

Baton Out of the Bag

School Is the Foundation of Life

Seventh form pupils at a grammar school in Přívlaky are preparing for a secondary school sports competition. Class creep Krhounek gives the class teacher Lejsal a copy of the seventh form’s magazine Roar. Most of the teachers insist on severe punishing the culprit. The author does not own up and consequently the whole class is punished by being banned from taking part in the schools competition. The most gifted pupil, Benetka, rather sharply criticises the school in a homework essay on a subject of his choice. The strict Czech language teacher is convinced Benetka is the author of the school magazine. Benetka denies the charge but his expulsion from school is proposed anyway on account the views he expounded in his essay. Eventually, Boukal, the author of the school magazine comes forward and admits to writing it. The pupils are allowed to take part in the contest and thanks to Benetka they win. In the meantime however the teachers vote to expell him.

The Blue Star Hotel

It all begins when Zuzanka, the new young owner, arrives at the dilapidated Blue Star Hotel. Determined to put the declining inheritance back on its feet, she starts chasing three young men, including the composer Jirka, who, dressed in a waiter's tailcoat, is to work off his debt to the new owner. Like his two friends, Jirka succumbs to the charms of his new boss and, with some confidence, hopes that he is the one who has the best chance of becoming her chosen one. At that moment, however, a guest arrives, intent on carrying out the family tradition and throwing an engagement party at the Blue Star Hotel, regardless of his condition. This, however, is not to the liking of his wilful fiancée. Fortunately, there is the sympathetic Zuzanka, who charms the unusual guest so much that he resolutely breaks off his engagement to the rich girl and prefers to marry the cute hotelier.

Of Things Supernatural

An anthology of three absurd, ironic tales inspired by Čapek’s “Tales from One Pocket” and “Fables and Side Stories,” each showing uncanny forces disrupting ordinary lives: in Krejčík’s “Glorie,” a gentle clerk is haunted by a sudden halo; the other two segments by Mach and Makovec similarly blend everyday routines with ironic, supernatural twists.

The story of a traveling comedy family that ends up in court, where young Fricek is charged with attempted murder because he protected his sister Olga from a rapist.

Valentin Dobrotivý

A very hardworking but also very naive insurance company clerk, Valentin Plavec, becomes the target of endless pranks, jokes and recessions from his colleagues Bejšovec and Voborník. However, their last successful trick somewhat gets out of hand. They add a one to the winning number 8456 and convince Valentin that he has won a million in the lottery. However, since Valentin cannot collect his winnings immediately, he withdraws twenty thousand, which is all the savings he has saved together with his fiancée Helena, and starts shopping for a deposit. However, the truth soon comes out and when his colleagues reveal to him that it was just a joke, they all leave him, only the faithful Helena stays and even helps the unfortunate fiancé cancel all the deposits and agreed deals. When the newspaper reports that there has been a mistake and the winning ticket is number 18456, Valentin decides to take revenge on the two pranksters...

The Hard Life of an Adventurer

A writer of pulp crime novels is drawn into a series of real crimes. This film was one of the first Czech attempts on a genre parody.

Moje první benefice

A television adaptation of the memories of one of the first important Czech actors, Jindřich Mošna, about his difficult theatrical beginnings. At that time, as a kandrdas – i.e. a beginner – he asked the director for a so-called benefit, which was a performance that belonged to an important actor and whose proceeds were to belong to him. The director agreed, but stipulated that he would take almost all of the fee. Mošna chose The Bell Ringer at the Mother of God as the performance.

A Charming Man

The main hero of the story is the editor Viktor Bláha, who likes to invent crazy mystifications, during which he has a good time at the expense of those around him. Not only friends pay for his jokes, especially his roommate Jan Valtera, but also completely unknown people who "get involved in his wound" and have no idea that the slightest mistake on their part will trigger an avalanche of Bláh's eloquence. But as they say, everything takes time... The film was shown for the first time at the Film Festival in Zlín on July 30, 1941.

Pozdní léto

"Everybody needs to feel that they belong to someone - and that's what our little František can give..." These are the words of childless Věra, who, together with her husband Karel, decides to take in an abandoned boy from an orphanage. The couple have tried many things in their lives: studying, finding a job. But none of these have fully satisfied them. But they have managed to create a home for themselves and now they want to offer it to a third child... Vera and her parents are delighted with the boy, who is still only a trial. But Karel, who himself lives with a sense of failure in his life, is finding it difficult and slow to adjust to the new member of the family...

Rána jistoty

A drama set in a rural environment. In 1948, in the middle of a joyful wedding, the groom Tomáš Záruba stumbles among the wedding guests with a gun in his hand. He was shot by his own father, who disapproved of his choice of bride. The groom, Tomáš, is the son of the old kulak Záruba, who during the occupation denounced his neighbor Libor, who subsequently ended up in a concentration camp. However, Libor survived, and young Tomáš Záruba falls in love with his daughter Jana and marries her despite his father's protests.

Jako kníže Rohan

Vladimír Menšík in a dramatic story of a suddenly rich peasant. The play tells the story of the tragic fate of A. Špáta, who, as a poor second time, unexpectedly inherited 15 thousand gulden. He is convinced that the capital ensures him for life that he will live "like Prince Rohan". He submits to his proud mother and underestimates a good and modest woman. He buys two houses in the countryside, hosts sycophantic neighbors in a pub - he tries to live like a rich man. The classic of Czech realistic prose K. V. Rais, whose novella "Špáta" was adapted for television by J. Z. Novák, realistically affected a person in relation to property and his desire to rise socially. In Špáta, he created a social type that surpassed his time.

Václava Kašpara den pátý

The story from a small Czech mountain village takes place over five days in February 1948 and describes the fate of a young couple, Tomáš and Vendula, against the backdrop of events that reflect the atmosphere of the time, with a political crisis brewing and radical changes on the horizon. The preparations for the wedding of the young couple – miner Tomáš and teacher Vendula – are not going according to plan. Food such as sugar, butter, and bread are still rationed. In addition to their personal problems, the escalating political situation further complicates matters. The lives of Tomáš and Vendula are affected by the disputes between their grandfathers – retired miner Václav Kašpar and his childhood friend, grocer Rynda. The youngest descendants of the feuding families thus find themselves in the fateful position of Romeo and Juliet.

He thinks that Mána does not know Czech, so he buys a German textbook so that he can speak to her. Soon the opportunity arises and the two young people confess their love. Samek is about to propose marriage to Mána. But Mána prevents him. She confides in him about her love and asks him to give Vašek a job...

A graduate of the Faculty of Philosophy, Karel Stržický earns extra money in the summer as a day laborer for the landowner Drahan. Jarča, the Drahans' daughter, spends the holidays with her parents, and her father has a lot of worries about her. The unsuccessful student is failing her German. However, an easy solution is offered - Karel will prepare her for remedial work. The mischievous Jarča considers him an ordinary coachman, and so she initially turns her nose up at him. However, the cultured young man manages to win her trust and heart. This does not go down well with his rival in the fight for the girl's favor, and he immediately comes up with a nasty slander: Karel is supposedly a former convict! A rift is not long in coming...

The factory owner's son Oldřich missed his own wedding. He overdid his bachelor party and spent the night before the wedding in Mr. Šourek's carriage, who asked him in vain for his address. In the morning, the cabman went to the police for advice, but the passenger woke up and drove away with his carriage. He headed for his bride, but she was offended and threw him out. Oldřich also became hardened and declared that he would marry the first girl he met. The further development of events was ensured by Šourek's horse Karel, when he headed home, bringing Boženka, his master's daughter, to Oldřich's path. But she was not interested in the spoiled young man either. So Oldřich bet with her father that he would work hard for a month. If he won, he would win Boženka's hand, the cab, and the faithful Karel...

Dentist Dr. Matys employs two laboratory assistants, brothers Alois and Benjamin Zoubkova. All the officials already have brides in mind, whom they call chicaneries. The news of the count's death causes a stir, and twelve merry-making parties are planned at the estate at once...

Battalion

Attorney František Uher is known for his patriotic mindset and active assistance in disputes between the Czechs and the Austrian justice system. One of his clients is the poet Šulc, who, while staying with Uhry, discovers that the lawyer's wife Anna is flirting with Uhry's cousin Hojer. When Anna does not respond to Šulc's warning, the poet draws attention to Anna's relationship with Uhra. Uher wants to know the truth, so he returns early from a business trip and actually catches Anna cheating. Disappointment brings him to the "Batalion" pub in Old Prague, where Šulc also used to go some time ago. Here, Uher becomes a mentor to the poorest, but gradually falls into alcoholism. He once again finds strength and stands on the side of justice when he accuses the police in court of murdering poor Lojzík, who wanted to marry the unfortunate waitress from "Battalion" Mimi. Ferdys sets off to burgle villa of the banker Rosenstok, but a fire breaks out in the house and Ferdys ends up saving the banker's two small children. Jan Hus

The first part of the "Hussite Revolutionary Trilogy", completed with Jan Žižka (1955) and Proti všem (Against All Odds, 1957). The film captures the period from May 1412 to the summer of 1415, a turbulent time in the Czech Kingdom, during which there were protests in Prague against the sale of "omnipotent indulgences" whose sale throughout the kingdom was announced by Pope John XXIII. The ideological leader of this movement is the preacher Master Jan Hus, whose words, calling for the elimination of church abuses, are listened to in the Bethlehem Chapel by thousands of ordinary Praguers, Czech lords and Queen Sophie, wife of the Czech King Wenceslas IV.

Marie, an active modern woman at work, has resigned herself to everything after a disappointment in life and allows herself to be completely used by her own family. The moment she comes home, she becomes a passive servant for the entire family, a good daughter and aunt. By the age of thirty-six, she has not managed to find her own happiness. Some time ago, her mother ruined Marie's wedding to architect Honza, who therefore preferred to leave the city. But Marie is determined to try to live her own life again and not let others drag her down. However, she only finds support in her father, who once betrayed his own young dreams for the good of the family. Will she find enough strength in herself to do it?

Instead of ruling, the king devotes himself to fishing and long conversations with the gardener, the princess, instead of pretending, like any proper princess, spends whole days in the kitchen, and the care of the kingdom thus falls to the queen. The queen decides to start the correction by marrying the princess; however, the groom must be noble and, above all, rich. The princess's cooking costs something, and the small wars that sometimes take place because of the queen's quarrelsomeness are also not completely free. The only problem is that the princess does not want to get married, and the king does not want to give his daughter to just anyone, but wants to entrust her to someone who will be kind and will truly love her.

A Czech art film set in a modern village. The main character of the film is Karla Tolarová, a worker from a Prague printing house, who arrives for a harvest shift at a unified agricultural cooperative in Běšíčice at a critical time for the cooperative. The grain in the fields is ripe, the machine-tractor station does not have the necessary machines for the cooperative, the cooperative members do not trust each other, they lose interest in working together.

September Nights

The commander of the military training camp, newly promoted Major Cibulka, keeps his subordinates in line. Because of an unexpected emergency, he refuses to give leave even to the young lieutenant Zabran, whose wife is due to give birth any day. In addition, a false article appears in an army newspaper claiming that Zábrana is an example of a bad company commander. In fact, it is he who has the best leadership skills. Fearing for his wife's health, Zábrana disobeys orders and departs for Prague at night to visit his wife in the maternity ward. Cibulka decides to push the envelope even harder, and drives Zábrana, whom he has long disliked, before the prosecutor.
