On the occasion of his last regulars’ table in his old neighbourhood of Schwabing, the laconic pensioner Schorsch's pals treat him to a cab drive to his new home in Neuperlach in the outskirts of the city. But Schorsch rather wants to take one last look at his old downtown apartment which he had renovated himself after the war, and where he had lived for almost forty years until his landlord bullied him out of there as the latter wanted to use the space for expensive luxury apartments. Because Schorsch’s wife wanted to move to “the countryside”, they thereupon moved to the Neuperlach development site in the outskirts of Munich. But amongst the uniformly looking housing blocks, Schorsch can’t even find his new apartment, and so, the grumpy cabdriver Gustl becomes his companion on a nightly odyssey.

The plot closely follows the Grimm fairy tale. Hans, a hard-working miller's apprentice, sets off on a journey to discover the big, wide world. As a reward for his work, his master gives him a lump of gold to take with him. On his journey home, he encounters a series of swindlers who gradually rob him of his reward. First, Hans exchanges his gold for a horse, the horse for a cow, the cow for a pig, the pig for a goose, and the goose for a grindstone and a simple field stone. Finally, while drinking, he drops both stones into a well. At last he is happy. He is freed from all burdens, in every respect.

On his travels, Paul, a journeyman from northern Germany, runs into a childhood friend, Lisei, a puppeteer's daughter. They fall in love and get married. As the government director arrives, after a few incidents during his journey, belated, the event, however, has already degenerated into a boozy carousal which culminates in a scuffle.
The villagers of Mauth are notorious for their stinginess. They are so thrifty that they can't even afford an organ for their church. When the mayor of Mauth goes to a wedding in the neighboring village, he attracts the ridicule of the entire pub society. Furious, he goes home and suggests to the local council that they should at least buy an organ to avert the ridicule from the village.

Emissaries sent from France and England have difficulty locating the man they are looking for, and the lovely Marie is courted by both Peters. An adaptation of Albert Lortzing's eponymous comic opera (1837).
