Kummerow has a chance again - and not just against the Zechin rowing club.
In September 1989, more and more GDR citizens fled to the West German embassy in Prague. Among them were Stefan and Bettina, who were spending their honeymoon in Czechoslovakia. When Stefan briefly returns to the GDR to fetch their young son, he also brings their friends Karin and Thomas with him. There is no end to the influx of refugees and the embassy is completely overwhelmed with those wanting to leave. What's more, despite hectic negotiations behind the scenes, no political solution seems to be on the horizon. The situation in the embassy garden is becoming increasingly dramatic. A humanitarian catastrophe is imminent.

The shipyard in Boizenburg is where welder Karl and his friends and relatives work. However, the effects of the shipyard crisis are increasingly making themselves felt in their lives. The brother-in-law of Karl's girlfriend, Kitty, loses his job and eventually takes his own life. Shortly afterwards, Karl also receives his notice of termination. After a night of drinking with his shipyard colleagues to drown his frustrations, he cheats on Kitty with another woman. Their great love seems to be coming to an end.

A fellow soldier of son Paul, who fights at the eastern front, delivers his greetings and an embroidered Russian blouse for Emmi, Paul′s wife. Daughter Agnes, whose husband is also fighting in the war, receives a fur vest from the junior partner who is stalking her. Obviously, the vest is also loot from the eastern front. When the family receives news that Emmi′s husband has been killed in action, the war finally enters the house at the river. Emmi commits suicide while Agnes′s husband returns as a cripple from the war front. At home, he has to learn what a price his wife had to pay for the "Russian fur".
