Ning Chan

Far Far Away

A 28-year-old I.T. geek suddenly finds himself the object of affection for five attractive women within the same year. The quintet share virtually no similar traits except one quirky thing: they all live in remote corners of Hong Kong.

The First Girl I Loved

On the night before Yuet's wedding, best friends Nam and Yuet recall their time together in school, when they shared a relationship that was more than friendship, but also perhaps not quite love.

Distinction

Two high school students from very different backgrounds participate in a musical with mentally disabled children, which eventually leads to the realisation of their dreams and aspirations.

Napping Kid

The financial analysis of a Chinese IT firm has been stolen, and a senior executive at the investment bank that wrote it must pay a ransom before the confidential report is released to the public. However, eyebrows are raised when the thieves ask for a surprisingly low amount for the ransom. What are the thieves really after?

We Miss, We Meet, We Move On

Love is a long road with moments of separation and reunion. Even an experienced driver must remember safety first and keep the clutch in check to avoid repeating the same mistakes in love. CHAN, a middle-aged man with several different types of driver’s license, is dissatisfied with young hearse driver Zi-ling’s driving skills, so he takes over the position. Two people who lost their better halves embark on a journey of life and death, healing, guilt, and letting go. The film depicts this road trip romance through a series of analogies related to modes of transportation, filling the screen with scenery on the roads of Hong Kong. The film, with its ambitious production scale, also charts the social changes of Hong Kong since the turn of the century.

Speak to the Tide

If a goddess has come down to earth, could she bring back lost time for man? Ning takes a substitute teaching position at a rural school, hoping to find inspiration for her novel from nature. One day after class, students Richard and LAM Mak-noeng, a mysteriously masked girl who shares the same name as the Empress of Heaven, come to her for help. It turns out that Mak-noeng is about to disappear. Faced with such an ethereal problem, Ning takes on the responsibility of a storyteller and seeks a happy ending for this heavenly romance. The director, who has always been interested in urban issues, has continued to mix historical and fantastical elements like he has done with Interview with Lo-Ting: An Oral History Project (2022). A modern love story with celestial inspiration, the film gently caresses the remnants of our city and the melancholy of lonely souls.

The Killers

“Every man has his own destiny: the only imperative is to follow it, to accept it, no matter where it leads him.” Inside an after-hours bowling alley, a counselling session is underway with the attendances discussing the various merits and drawbacks of execution strategies and the prevention of occupational hazards. A man offers to play the flute and all hell breaks loose from there. The weapon is a folded chair, the victims his fellow professionals and the crime is predestined by karma. As the camera lingers on the gory actions, set to offbeat music and at times muted and occurring out-of-frame, a foreboding, dark and somewhat sinister overtone hangs heavy in the air. In a profession such as his, life is predestined by karma and choice is not an option.

Interview with Lo Ting: An Oral History Project

Lee Sin-yu wants to make a documentary about a friend and his dementia grandfather, who would occasionally say that his wife is "Lo Ting". Lee Sin-yu set out for the fishing village of Tap Mun to begin filming, and starts to understand the dark side of Lo Ting that has been hidden in history.

Missing

Inside "Remembering", there is an old, worn bulletin board covered with missing person notices and messages of longing accumulated over the years. One night, both of them encountered people in the city carrying memories and pain. Searching for the missing is just a process; perhaps the people we cannot find are simply living in a place happier than where we are.
