Zhŕňajova nevesta

The rich farmer Shrnej is such a miser that he won't even marry so he doesn't have to support his wife and won't even allow his servant to do so. He uses his wits and comes up with a ruse - when the farmer goes to town, he sees a girl at the crossroads who sings that she doesn't eat or drink, that she only lives on air. That would be a woman! A hard worker and she wouldn't cost him anything! And so the farmer marries, unaware that he's marrying his servant's sister, who makes a living like everyone else. It's only when he thinks she's been roasted by him that he begins to suspect her. But wherever he hides so he can follow her, he pays the price, and almost loses his life...

Rivers of Babylon

Dark satire about bare-knuckled capitalism in the immediate post-Cold War era. Set just as the Communist government is collapsing, the film focuses on the brutish Racz, the handyman in a Bratislava hotel. Knowing that his job is insured for life, Racz turns off the building's heat and demands food, money, and sex to have it restored. The film is narrated by a pimp named Urban who explains that people in the former Czechoslovakia were so used to being abused that they simply put up with Racz's corruption. By the end of the film, Racz's fortunes have changed considerably. Instead of being a lowly worker, he is now a ruthless and wealthy businessman, unafraid to kill or kidnap those who get in his way.

Kryštof

The story of a barely grown man who lives as a fresh postulant before vows in a community of monks. He not only shares with his brothers their world of contemplation, but also, as a link in a long chain, he takes those persecuted by the communist regime across the border to Germany. On one night's return, he witnesses a ruthless crackdown on a group of students fleeing from a nearby village where they had been on compulsory work experience. And not only that: that night, a community of monks is also liquidated in Action K (April 1950), and the returning Christopher witnesses their transport without being able to help his comrades.

Hu - hu bratia

Uncle Von Pressburg's mysterious will changes the whole course of the household, where the servant Alfred takes care of the children Christine and Oliver. The children are threatened with boarding school, but in his will, the uncle decides that the children will be cared for by guardians and, in order to give them something to live on, he offers them the opportunity to set up the world's first ghost rental company. The children make friends with the ghosts, unlike their overbearing siblings who can't get along with anyone on good terms. To make matters worse, two world-famous thieves break into the basement.

Hanele

Based on an autobiographical novella by Ivan Olbracht, the film tells the story of Hanele Safarová, who grows up just after the First World War in a little Ruthenian schtetl which, in true Hassidic fashion, awaits the arrival of the Messiah. But Hanele decides to follow the Zionists instead. She moves to the city to prepare for her departure to the Promised Land, where she meets a successful businessman named Ivo Karadzic, who has renounced Judaism to become a free-thinker. Their love for each other doesn’t only drive Hanele’s parents to distraction, it also threatens to destroy the entire community in the schetl.

Johanka's Secret

A new man comes into the world and his fate is watched over by three female judges. One of them endows him with exceptional qualities, the second puts many obstacles in his way and the third advises him how he can find his happiness in life in spite of everything. But what happens if one of the women judges fails in her task? In a fairy tale story full of suspense, humour and surprises, the kind and wise girl Johanka finds out for herself... There will be a stubborn prince, an unjust and greedy uncle, or a forgetful fairy Tea, but most of all a lot of love, which, as it happens in fairy tales, will help Johanna to overcome almost all the obstacles of fate.
