The Greatest Czechs

Men in Rut

The story takes place in the small South Moravian village of Mouřínov, where the road ends. The residents long to become a "transit" village, and since there is a champion deer caller among them, they make a great effort to host the European Championship in this unique but interesting discipline. The village is busy with preparations, but that's not all. At the same time, the residents' obvious and unspoken relationships are developing, and just as the preparations affect their lives, their relationships affect the course of the preparations. And one day, the championship finally begins...

Láska In Memoriam

Sixteen-year-old apprentice Zuzka commutes to Prague, where she is studying to become a "mechanic and agricultural machinery adjuster." She lives alternately at a boarding school and at her parents' farm. At home, endless work awaits her, and at school, she is constantly ridiculed by her classmates. Only at night, in the girls' dormitory, under the covers, can she live out her dreams of love. She is secretly and platonically in love with actor and singer Jiří Pavel, about whom she knows everything. She keeps a scrapbook diary in which she records all of Pavel's acting and singing successes.

Bastardi 2

The second part begins shortly after the death of Michal Dostál, the biggest bastard of them all. Michal's father and grandfather are convinced that teacher Majer was behind the murders of all three students and was avenging his sister's death. They begin to psychologically torment Majer and search for evidence. The new police investigator Karas, who takes over the case from the deceased police investigator Paleček, is also looking for evidence. Karas immediately suspects something is amiss in the deaths of the "bastards" and also begins to focus on Majer, who is now the school principal.

Rajónové blues

This tragicomic musical film by renowned screenwriter Karel Čabrádek deals with compulsory military service during the end of normalization in the 1980s. The main characters are two conscripts with different personalities, Pavel and Tonda, who serve in a military band in a remote garrison town.

Shadow of the Deceased

The nurse Helga meets Baltic nobleman Arno when he's wounded in the Russo-Finnish war. They have a short but passionate affair before Arno is called back to the front and dies. Helga has a daughter, Dorli, as a result of the affair and they have to struggle to survive after the Red Army wins the war.

El Paso

The Horváth family is a Romani family with seven children, and the story begins with the tragic death of the father. His wife, Vera, is suddenly in a fight with the authorities, determined to keep her large family together at all costs, but she is hopelessly ill-prepared for the task. They are evicted from their home and her case-Vera versus the city-finds its way to a young, ambitious lawyer. She doesn't know the world of the Romani, nor is she particularly interested in it. Initially she takes the case as a springboard for her career. Despite her prejudices, incomprehension and sometimes Vera herself, she doesn't abandon the case. Luckily she is not the only one who sides with the family. There is a social worker whose attempts to help the Horváths are also motivated by his entirely private interest in the attractive lawyer.

Sny o tátovi

The trial of Alfred Plock differed from previous trials in that it did not have an explicitly political background. A group of engineers from the Ministry of Post, Industry, and Standard Electric were charged solely because they wanted to implement a revolutionary technological innovation and turn Prague into the headquarters of a new pan-European telecommunications system. Among other things, they wanted to enhance their country's prestige on the international stage. However, it was precisely this intention that aroused the suspicion of the security authorities and Soviet advisers. They therefore decided to take decisive action.

Be the Man!

Pavel may be in his forties, but he still hasn't fully matured. He lives with his mother and lacks the courage to do what would truly fulfill him in life. He only gets this when he meets his childhood sweetheart, Tereza, and spends an adventurous night with her. However, Tereza is not ready to leave her current life for someone who, according to her, is not a real man. So Pavel decides to become exactly that kind of guy. He signs up for a training camp in the Tatras led by Weisner, who teaches everything from chopping wood to seducing women. Will Pavlo manage to overcome himself and become the man Tereza longs for?

When the Lion Roars

This is the story of the Bohemian King, Přemysl Otakar II, and the forgotten pilgrim, Odorik, who was the first-ever European to set eyes on Tibet. This medieval road movie brings an unconventional view to these two great figures of Czech medieval history. While the character of Odorik, regarded as the “Bohemian Marco Polo,” is practically unknown to us, the Bohemian King Přemysl Otakar II is either demonized or dismissed by the traditional clichés of the “Iron and Golden King.” In a private conversational format, the film’s author gives us a glimpse of this medieval world, set nearly 700 years apart from our modern context. But nothing has been lost in terms of this world’s impact or relevance, for both Odorik and Přemysl have outlived their time. Their lives are surprisingly endearing and touch on many of our current feelings.

O Radkovi a Mileně

The fairy tale is based on two fairy tales by Božena Němcová, "Righteous Bohumil" and "The Black Princess". It tells the story of a weak king and his wife, whose desire for a child leads her to a conspiracy with the devil. The princess, who grows up under the influence of the "impure" powers, only escapes from their power thanks to her love for the fisherman Radek.

Ledviny bez viny

Detective Miller lives with his mother even though he is over forty. He has a serious girlfriend, but he tries to keep her as far away from his nosy mother as possible. He likes his peace and comfort. He tends to avoid problems rather than solve them. This is probably why he hides from everyone that he has kidney problems and that, on his doctor's orders, he has to carefully measure and record all his fluid intake and output over the coming weekend. This causes him no end of trouble, as everyone interprets his strange behavior differently - his mother, his girlfriend, and his colleague at work.

Pleasant Moments

Hana is a psychologist and a thoroughly independent woman. Her unemployed husband, jealous of his wife, finds a younger girlfriend, but their teenage son Honzik is frustrated; everyone ignores him. Hana's patient Eva, an attractive middle-aged woman, is having problems with her 25-year-old son; she is in love with her son's friend and her son is offended by her behavior. To complete the circle, he falls in love with Hana and Honzik is utterly disgusted by their affair. Another of Hana's patients is Dub, a millionaire who can have pretty much anything, or anyone, he wants. He wants Hana. But he can't have her.

Waves

At the end of the 1960s, when the air is filled with rock-and-roll and student rebellions are changing the world, the older of two brothers joins a prestigious newsroom of the public radio broadcaster. Boží duha

Na druhý pohled

This contemporary story deals with the relationship between two brothers, which fell apart catastrophically twenty years ago and has still not been repaired. Karel is a successful businessman in a small Czech town, while Emil has prison tattoos, works as a day laborer, and drifts from one hostel to another. He apparently has a child somewhere, but only sends child support. Karel has a loving family, but his wife and two teenage children have no idea what happened between the brothers years ago; the children don't even know about Emil's existence. Karel needs Emil's help, so Emil spends several days at Karel's house. As far as brotherly help is concerned, the situation, as we learn from flashbacks, is complicated and may never be resolved, but Emil becomes close to Karel's family, discovers what he has been missing all his life, and comes forward to his daughter himself.

Summer with the gentleman

Anna spends every summer with her husband in a neighborhood a few dozen kilometers outside Prague. They've been together for ages, so their marriage, as is so often the case, has become routine and stereotyped. For a long time, the man has divided his time fairly between drinking with friends in the pub and making ship models of matches in bottles; His wife is virtually invisible to him. Anna spends several days each summer and enjoys regular meetings with her friends and colleagues who visit her in picturesque Central Bohemia on bike tours around Kamýk Castle.

A theatrical adaptation of Jiří Křižan's screenplay performed by the Mahen Theater in Brno, which premiered on October 9, 2015. A drama set in the summer of 1943 in the Moravian village of Lakotice, where farmer Baran flees from the Gestapo. The village is gripped by fear of the local informer Sekal, who has already denounced two farm owners and received their property in return, while they were sent to concentration camps and killed. The bastard is now the biggest farmer in the village and makes it clear that two farms are not enough for him...

My Uncle Archimedes

Swingtime

The story is based on Operation Stone, during which State Security agents deliberately misled citizens of the Czechoslovak Republic who were attempting to leave the country illegally by creating fake borders and fake border patrols and interrogation teams from American, German, and French authorities. During interrogations, State Security officers convinced detainees that they had actually crossed the state border of our republic and obtained information from unsuspecting people, which was then used in criminal proceedings.

Pátek čtrnáctého

The psychological story begins innocently enough with a meeting between two young people in the basement of a suburban house. A flirtatious and bored girl, who is not particularly selective about her lovers, provokes an unpredictable reaction in her partner with her unexpected rejection. Not only does the boy rape the girl, but, fearing discovery, he kills her. All this is witnessed by a little boy wandering through the holiday-empty house, who thus becomes an inconvenient and dangerous witness for the murderer. The psychological and later physical "battle" between these two unequal opponents, who are not really opponents at all, culminates in a story of guilt and punishment, and at the same time of a special friendship and loyalty.

A funny story telling you how a magician's visit can turn his life back and how Ondra may have been fortunate enough. In the poetic fairy-tale grotesque, taking place in the non-existent town of Jack-o'-lantern, the time has stopped. The hands on the clocks show twelve minutes in twelve minutes, as if they were symbolically giving the last chance. Only the mysterious figure of Acrude knows how the story of the bluddy and the fate of his heroes will come. The well-known clairvoyant Heliodromus arrives in town. A story inspired by real events from the 1950s to the 1970s. Honza Steiner was neither a tough guy nor a thug. He was just a boy who had the misfortune of finding himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. He ended up on the wrong path due to a series of unfortunate coincidences. Honza was raised in children's homes, juvenile detention centers, and eventually prison. He waged a long, undeclared war with a public security officer, one that was not exactly abounding in rules. The conflict culminated in a staged hunt for Honza, who unfortunately shot his arch-enemy and was sentenced to death for it.

Bastardi III

Teacher Tomáš Majer, who joined a former special school in 2010, has disappeared. He arrived at the school several months after his sister Jana, also a teacher, was murdered. During the school year, the boys who murdered Jana Majerová mysteriously died. Tomáš Majer most likely avenged his sister in cold blood.

Seven Days of Sin

This story actually happened in the region around the city of Sumperk in Jeseniky Mountains in May 1945. The disappearance of Agnes, the German wife of a Czech forester Jan Olsan is a dark mystery. She is the only one who knows who and for what reason is looking for her. It's the end of the war, times are bad and the Czechs are coming back from the inland to the frontier. The guards are forming and soldiers are coming. Fate brings together the outlaw Jan and his German brother-in-law Jurgen who has just returned from the eastern front line. Both men are looking for exactly the same woman and that is Agnes. But Agnes escaped; she is running away through the deep woods followed by the most powerful man of the county. Running away for what she had witnessed. The fatality of the relationship between Agnes and Jan can only be learned in the mountains on this thorny journey.

The City of the Sun

But Stela is not willing to accept defeat and is determined not to give up without a fight. She vows that, come what may, she will find someone who will make her husband green with envy. So she launches a grand audition for a new love. She starts dating, but every date is with an eccentric and unsuitable suitor, and every date ends in disaster. Will Stela finally find the right one? Or have all the decent men died out?

The story, set mainly in the picturesque surroundings of a First Republic swimming pool, offers many surprises in the form of unexpected performances by acting and singing stars, who pay tribute to the lady of Czech swing.

Car Fairy Tales

The film consists of five parts - a live-action framing story and four distinct animated episodes - each by a different creative team and in a different animation style, from Pojar and Koutský’s semi-plastic “Princess Who Never Smiled,” through Žabka’s puppet fable “The Fairy and the Bookkeeper,” Dlouhá and Váša’s paper-cut “Fisherman, His Wife, and the Golden Fish,” to Pixa’s near-future parable “Mr. Vincent”.

Nightline

Under Czech law, most murders can be statute-barred in as little as 20 years. Radio presenter Eva gets involved in one case that is time-barred almost irretrievably. On her nightly show, she gives space to the mysterious Radek, who has returned to Prague after exactly twenty years.

Jako letní sníh – Život J. A. Komenského

The life story of Jan Amos Comenius, who became probably the most famous Czech exile due to his beliefs and opinions. He spent most of his life outside his homeland, but nevertheless, with his unique ideas, which he recorded in almost 200 books and writings, he was far ahead of his time and influenced the whole world.

Vánoční hvězda

Stationmaster Miloš, a lonely trumpet player nearing fifty, watches life pass him by as he mourns alone at a funeral and pines secretly for Tereza, the charming nurse who boards his afternoon train. Desperate for courage, his bandmates enter him into a televised Christmas talent show, “Vánoční hvězda”, and, in the glow of the stage lights, Miloš finally finds love.

Bastardi: Reparát

Teacher Majer is released from prison under an amnesty. His elementary school classmate Ivan, who lives in a Roma ghetto, takes him into his home. Majer has no family. He has no one left, so he welcomes Ivan's offer. Ivan tells Majer that he has decided to help him mainly because he needs to reopen the school where Majer used to teach and briefly served as principal. Living in the ghetto, Ivan is familiar with the problems of his community and knows that the closure of their beloved school has not been good for them. Majer begins to reach out to his former colleagues and, above all, his students to ask for their help. Many of his students also have children of their own. He experiences a number of comical situations with them. However, he has no idea that he is still being watched by Dostál, the eldest member of the mafia family, who knows that Majer has been released and decides to avenge his son and grandson.

Nepolepšitelný

After the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Warsaw Pact troops, everyone is packing their bags to leave the country. Martin Ivánek, who has just been dismissed from his position as head physician, has a valid passport and an exit visa to the United Kingdom. He has made up his mind. But! He has a complicated medical case on his hands, which turns into a personal commitment.

Journey to Rome

The day’s work never ends for a guard worth his salt, even when the gallery closes at seven. And Vašek is a perfect example, at least until he meets Ginger – a femme fatale who has her own plans where he’s concerned. Love turns this nice lad into a thief: armed with a false moustache, sunglasses and a stolen painting, he gets on a train and it remains to be seen whether or not his journey to Rome is paved with good intentions. The train compartment is full of passengers keen to impart their life stories – to him or to anyone who’ll listen. The withdrawn young man pays close attention to it all, even though he has plenty to worry about as it is. The police and a bunch of crooks are hot on his heels and it’s difficult trying to give them the slip with a hefty painting in tow.

Poklad rytíře Miloty

On 25 April 1605, the knight Milota was killed by the royal armourers while escaping from the castle of Temice. However, the robbed treasures were not found in his possession. Almost 400 years later, Jindra, Tomas and eighteen-year-old Alena spend their holidays at the castle with their grandfather, the castellan. The castle needs repairs, but there is no money for them. Tomas and Jindra decide to find Milot's treasure, which could help the castle. The visitors are guided by Alena and two temporary workers, Roman and Petr. Among the tourists, Professor Horák, who shows a suspicious interest in the castle's collections, attracts the boys' attention...

Mole's world

After the romantic comedies Love Made to Order, Superwoman, and Casting for Love, director Eva Toulová comes with a story in which the main role is not love, but power and money. The initial impetus for the creation of Mole's world was the real-life case of Josef Roušal, the owner of a Prague amusement park. For years, he has been rejecting the verdicts of state authorities that he operates his business without the necessary permits and infrastructure.

Fair Play

In the 1980s, Anna, a Czech sprinter, starts training for the Olympics. After she collapses during training, she learns she is being given steroids and decides to stop using them until her mother helps the coaches give them to her.

Zobani

A young soldier, a librarian by profession and a pacifist by nature, reports for basic military service at a border barracks. Bullying reigns supreme at the unit, quietly tolerated by the officers. Private Adam resists and physically attacks the leader of the senior soldiers, but he stands no chance and later ends up in hospital. Private Banýr, an artistic blacksmith in civilian life, is even murdered by the senior soldiers. The librarian and the gypsy Aladar become the main targets of bullying. The two flee together and stage an attempt to escape across the border. Aladar is shot by the senior soldiers and the librarian is detained by border guards, but the entire group of senior soldiers is brought to trial.
