Night Riders

Two men of principle face each other. One is backed by a whole, however poor village, the other by the law. It is a conflict that reaches it's climax in the closing shoot-out. Instead of the Wild West, the gunshots go off on the Slovak-Polish border. Michal Docolomansky as the horse smuggler and Radoslav Brzobohaty as the customs officer from Prague meet in Holly's Night Riders in a western-like confrontation set in the insecure years of the newly founded Czechoslovak Republic.

Karline manželstvá

A psychological story of a young woman who, after two failed marriages, finds the strength to fight for her independence and lost self-confidence. After Ondrej's death and the disappointment of her second relationship, she returns to Ondrej's parents with her son to start working and living again.

Ťapákovci

The life of the Ťapák family is joyless. Twelve of them live in one room, no one considers that it is possible to live differently. They have already gotten used to it - they have no desire to change anything - after all, it has been that way for a long time. The heaviness of the Ťapák house is only disturbed by the bride Iľa, Paľ's wife. She is a midwife in the village. But they only want one thing - to have peace, quiet. This is how it goes day after day. Without excitement, slowly, with a bitter, almost imperceptible relationship to each other and to life in the village. The tension is only brought here by Ilina's efforts for change, to which the family members no longer even react. The smartest of the family is Anča. However, she does not want to become Ilina's companion. Both legs have been crippled since childhood, so she only watches her sister-in-law's activities with envy.

Rabaka

A popular band called Rabaka, portrayed by members of Elán (Jožo Ráž and Jano Baláž), faces internal conflicts leading to their breakup. Set against the backstage of the music scene, the film follows their struggles with fame, personal tensions, and creative differences. After time apart, the former bandmates confront past grievances and rediscover their passion for performance, ultimately deciding to reunite and return to the concert stage.

Hriech

Dramatization of four classic one-act plays by J. G. Tajovský: "Hriech" (Sin, 1911), "Tma" (Darkness, 1912), "V službe" (In the Service, 1911) and "Matka" (Mother, 1906), which capture the image of social changes and changes in people's thinking prior to the First World War.

Salt & Gold

A fairy-tale about the power of love. The old king Pravoslav feels it is time to entrust the rule over his kingdom to one of his three daughters - the one that loves him the most. The youngest, Maruška, fails her father's expectations about proving how deep her love him is. He misunderstands her and she is made to leave the castle. She faces many dangers on the way to her loved one, the Salt Prince.

Rajónové blues

This tragicomic musical film by renowned screenwriter Karel Čabrádek deals with compulsory military service during the end of normalization in the 1980s. The main characters are two conscripts with different personalities, Pavel and Tonda, who serve in a military band in a remote garrison town.

Studené podnebie

A sensitive and modest girl gets married and lives with her family in the mountains. After her husband leaves for the army, she finds herself isolated by her family and her surroundings. The father-in-law perceives the bride's sadness and tries to establish a more cordial relationship with the lonely girl. This, however, gives rise to speculation about the bride's moral failure. She cannot bear the shame of suspicion and throws herself under the wheels of the locomotive. The blame for the death of a frail, honest man lies with those who acted on unverified assumptions of passion and suspicion.

It's Better to Be Healthy and Wealthy than Poor and Sick

A satiric tragi-comedy about two women and their lover Robert who is an emigrant that keeps coming back. This film shows chaotic post-communist Europe after the fall of totalitarianism. Two opposite characters, women, meet during the Velvet Revolution in November 1989. Intellectual dissident Nona and a Communist secret police boss’ mistress Ester. They meet at an anti-regime demonstration and become friends. They don’t want anything to do with politics, both want to get married and have kids, but also get rich. Crazy plans and risky attempts to realize their shared dreams land them in many sticky situations in the post-revolution chaos. Too much money gets in the way of the power of friendship.

Vynes na horu svoj hrob

The Himalayan mountain Makalu, located in Nepal, is the fifth highest mountain in the world. In 1973, a Czechoslovak expedition also attempted to climb it via the challenging route, the so-called South Pillar, but it ended tragically. The group of climbers led by the experienced Ivan Kaščák (real-life Ivan Gálfy) is composed of the fittest men. In the base camp and during the preparation of the advanced camps, the expedition struggles with common health problems - a sore tooth, intestinal problems or a cold. For the actual climb to the summit of Makalu, Kaščák chooses a young engineering student Milan, a colleague Karol who is a generation older than him, and a young man Jož. In the advanced camp, without Kaščák's knowledge, he gives up his place to the ambitious Karol. However, due to fatigue and lack of oxygen, Milan falls down a snowy slope and injures his head and spine. He can‘t be transported down.

Ábelův černý pes

Abel is a shy introverted man living on the outskirts of the village. To protect his privacy, he convinces the whole village that he has bought a big black dog. And to complete the illusion, Abel buys imaginary dog kibble and howls at night instead. One day, however, Abel's non-existent dog strangles the neighbor's geese. At some point, reality and illusion will become indistinguishable, and Abel will have to pay for his fabrications.

LENI

The play is an atypical story about Leni Riefenstahl, Adolf Hitler's court director, one of the best filmmakers in the world, who rose to fame thanks to films commissioned by the Third Reich. The character of Leni was portrayed by Zdena Studénková in the drama of the Slovak National Theatre. The original Slovak play Leni by Valerie Schulczová and Roman Olekšák is about a fictional meeting of two real people. The legendary presenter Johnny Carson, whose "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson" was one of the most watched talk shows in America for thirty years, and the controversial Leni Riefenstahl, Adolf Hitler's "court director". It's 1974, Johnny is at the height of his career, and Leni is in America presenting her first completed project since the defeat of Germany - a book of photographs from Africa - Last of Nubu. But Johnny knows what his audience is more interested in than art.

Man Is Not Desirable

Konecná stanica

A Slovak film adaptation of the eponymous play Radošina Naive Theatre. Time stood still at a small and neglected Slovak railway station. The locals are stuck in place, know each other well and live according to learned rituals with no prospect of change any time soon. An unexpected impulse to the sleepy community is brought about by the discovery of the corpse of one of the cronies in the station toilets and the arrival of an energetic policewoman to investigate.

Bičianka z doliny

A TV adaptation of Zuzka Zguriška's novel of the same name. The story takes place in a characterful Slovak village. It shows a picture of the inhabitants of Myjava in the 1920s, where there is no lack of freshness, brightness, liveliness and cheerfulness. The main character, a wealthy patriarchal ruler, orders her three adult sons around. She refuses to acknowledge her son's love; she does not want a poor bride. She enjoys the rich Susanna, whom the second son marries. After many convoluted and humorous transformations, the poor girl nevertheless wins the seemingly stony heart of the Scourge.

She Kept Asking for the Moon

Johanka had a fling with a well digger she had not met before and who, she was most likely certain, would never be around again. Just before his departure, they have sex and she eventually becomes single mother of a baby girl. Now, 18 years later, her daughter Paulina commutes by bus to work in the nearby city, which gives the village gossips the occasional opportunity to remind her of her unknown father. A resultant conflict with her mother makes Paulina take up residence in the city. Johanka, prodded by her also-single friend Jozefka who maintains that a woman without a man is nothing, begins to woo the new teacher Jarek only to discover later that he is married. Paulina, in the meantime, loses her virginity to the soldier Jirka who promptly makes himself scarce. Johanka fails to consider that she actually has a better life than some of her married neighbors, begins to see.

Let There Be Light

Milan, a Slovak working in Germany as a bricklayer, returns home to celebrate Christmas with his wife and three children, one of whom appears to be involved in suspicious activities related to an extremist organization.

By a Sharp Knife

Ludovít's only son was murdered by neo-Nazis. However, due to the dysfunctional judicial system, the same perpetrators are released, and Ľudo is trying with all its might to achieve their re-arrest. He struggles with the apathetic police, the opportunistic judge, but also with the fact that he did not know his son well enough and was not a support for him. The more he blames himself for his death, the more his relationship with his wife Zuzana and daughter Janka falls apart. And all the more persistently he tries to intervene in the investigation himself. However, when he learns that his son's death was not a random attack by extremists, but an organized criminal group, he realizes that he is up against an enemy beyond his strength. He will try to save at least what he has left - his own family.

The Feather Fairy - Two Worlds

Lukáš, Alžbetka's son, takes off into the world looking for happiness and love. His godmother, the celestial Lady Winter, keeps an eye on him. He arrives late in the fairy-tale land that she leads him to. Fear reigns where once cakes grew on trees. The miraculous ram has disappeared and the royal town is cursed. Lukáš has to decide what is closer to his heart: a fortune or love?

...kone na betóne

The loose sequel to the film "Pásla kone na betóne" returns to the familiar heroes after some time. The communist dictatorship is no longer raging and capitalism is penetrating even the remote corners of Slovakia. As it turns out, however, people don't change much over time, and their joys and worries are still the same. The tragicomic story depicts the vicissitudes of Johanna's new relationship with brewery manager Janko Kvašný, the unhappy marriage of her daughter Paulina and life in the new social conditions in an eastern Slovak village.

Zurvalec

Screenwriter Antonín Máša wrote a television production Zurvalec based on Turgenev's short story. It is a psychological drama about the conflicting encounter between Lieutenant Kister and the dangerous duelant Captain Luchkov, who drives away the boredom of an empty life in a backwater province with a series of violent acts. The tense relationship between the two men, expressing a contradiction of creative tolerance and aggression, is exacerbated by their interest in a woman who succumbs to admiration for the "predator" Luchkov. The tragic confrontation of different approaches to life raises the question of the possibilities of defending human decency over evil.

Radical Cut

Detective Weiner probes the death of Tomáš Ruml, found in a ruined house. Son of the architect behind a planned gypsy-quarter demolition, Tomáš seems a revenge victim, until Weiner meets Naha and uncovers Tomáš’ blackmail, rape and theft. Guided by baron Tancos, he must rethink the case from a new angle.

Podozrenie

As part of his convalescence after an operation, Commissioner Bärlach, suffering from cancer, reads an old American magazine with a photograph of the war criminal Dr. Nehle, who performed operations without anaesthesia in the Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig. His attending physician, Hungertobel, recognises in the photograph Dr Emmenberg, a former colleague from school, who bears a striking resemblance to the aforementioned Nehle. The Commissioner therefore decides to launch an investigation into his latest case.

The Peacemaker

When a train carrying atomic warheads mysteriously crashes in the former Soviet Union, a nuclear specialist discovers the accident is really part of a plot to cover up the theft of the weapons. Assigned to help her recover the missing bombs is a crack Special Forces Colonel.

There was such a kingdom, there was such a king, who took the advice of stupid and ungrateful people and issued an order that all old people, under threat of death, must be disposed of by his subjects. But in that kingdom there was also one brave man who did not give in to threats and orders and secretly continued to take care of his father with love and respect. And it was his grandfather's advice that saved the kingdom and perhaps all ungrateful and selfish people will come to their senses even today through our fairy tale.

Vták nociar

Many films have received almost no audience response at the time of their release in cinemas - this one is one of them. The story of a sick writer who returns to his native region to gain new physical and mental strength, however, did not impress, it is too artificial, with dialogues and plots rustling paper. It lacks both a believable depiction of the main character's mood and adequate realization certainty, the hero's silent discussions with the personified Inspiration sound cumbersome.

Dom pod morušou

A story about the problems of a contemporary woman in her everyday life. Through the lives of a mother and her two daughters, there is a noticeable effort to capture the fragile world of women, connected with the struggle for independence and self-realization.

Dvadsaťštyri hodín zo života istej ženy

In the early 20th century, in the surroundings of a luxurious boarding house and casino, the story of a mature woman and an immature young man unfolds. He is obsessed with gambling, she with the desire to save him with her love. It happened twenty years ago. The elderly noble lady recalls her experience in her youth and, with the benefit of hindsight, explains and defends it.

Cukor

A TV film based on Karol Horák's novel. The story takes place in southern Gemer in the spring of 1945. It covers several days in the first months after the war. Matyla, a simple village woman, sets out into the world to get sugar for her daughter and her unborn child. A film about a mother, which is a testimony about people and an era from the perspective of the current middle generation.

Hody

One of the annual gatherings of the Nádašskov family turns into a confrontation between different attitudes to life and generational views. The son-in-law tries to convince every member of the large family of the advantages of selling the old family home.

Ženy môjho muža

The stories of all the characters are linked to the fate of a media-successful married couple. The film is an account of life in a Central European metropolis, from which humanity and spiritual values are disappearing as a result of a hasty lifestyle. Vera and Daniel's marriage has been deadlocked for a long time, Vera is at the end of her career as an actress and Daniel prefers to hang out with younger girls than with his own wife. In addition, a young Macedonian woman, Liana, enters their family and Vera finds a part of herself in her. Parallel to Vera and Daniel, Eva, a nurse, and Martin, a designer, are looking for a place in life.

Silence

Marta and Jozef have four children. Jozef commutes to Prague for work. Marta works in a bakery, devotes all her energy to children. The eldest daughter Lenka is currently experiencing her first real love for the student Karol and wants to go to America with him. Her brother Milan spends a difficult period of puberty with a group of boys who amuse themselves by spying on couples making love. The nine-year-old accordionist Katka is jealous of her five-year-old sister Milka, because she thinks that her mother pays more attention to her. The story begins at the moment when Marta announces to Jozef that they are expecting their fifth child. The events that follow are a difficult but at the same time necessary test for all family members...
