The Lady is a Little Crazy

Bimbi, aka Takács Klára is unemployed. She lives in a sublet and has no idea how she will live and pay her bills. But luckily for her, the previous tenant, who had a letter of recommendation for the director of Tormássy Works, has now been put in a mental home. So he can apply for a job with the "unused" letter of recommendation. Since the letter says that the "lady with a bit of a bug" will not get a job, she can go to the son of the CEO as a typist's assistant.

The School-Mistress

The protagonist of the story is Flora, a teacher who wants to teach in the village, in accordance with her vocation and her oath. Her beauty and purity bring her into conflict with the local authorities and with the landowning family of the countryside. Aware of her truth, she defies them, but can only count on the sympathy of the old priest. István Nagy Jr., the idle, dissolute landowner's son, falls in love with Flóra, and love changes him: he takes her side, exposing the lecherous hypocrites.

Germinal

Dismissed from the railroads in 1863 for his union activities, Etienne Lantier found a job at the Voreux coal mine. But work was hard, wages were low and safety left much to be desired. Lantier tried to organize the miners into a union. When mine manager Hennebeau refused to negotiate, the workers launched a general strike, which ended with the intervention of the troops.

Másfél millió

Mihai Toth worked for forty years as a watchman in a timber warehouse. On his last watch, there was a fire: the warehouse burned to the ground. The damage amounted to one and a half million forints. It was a terrible blow to Mihai, who had worked honestly all his life. Suddenly it turns out that Mihai has won one and a half million forints in a lottery. Wanting to save his good name, he wants to deposit this sum in the state treasury. But it turned out to be not so easy: the cause of the fire has not been established and Mihai's guilt has not been proved. That's why nobody had the right to take money from him. For a long time Mihai wandered from one institution to another with a request to accept money from him, but everything was in vain. Then the old man tried a trick...

A Train of Ghosts

Remake of the English movie Ghost Train (1931, Walter Forde). Seven people are stranded for a stormy night at a remote, unmanned railroad station past which, every midnight, steams the "ghost" of a train which wrecked there 20 years ago.

Don't Keep Off the Grass

Daddy Kárász, the stakhanovist worker, complains in a television interview about the fact that his family, consisting of many members, cannot get a home on their own. Kéri, the chairman of the local authority, promises to help him on the condition that if he does not, they may move in to his villa at elegant Pasarét. Nothing happens, therefore the Kárász family takes Kéri by his word. From this time on, tumultuous scenes and frequent quarrels take place in the villa between the two families.

Ward No. 9

The young worker Tóth Gáspár gets into hospital with stomachache. During the night his state is worsening. The doctor on duty, Málnási does not attend the patient despite the call of the nurse, for he spends the night with nurse Margó.

The Sea has Risen

March 15, 1848; the revolution breaks out in the town of Pest. Yet at café Pilvax, in among he revolutionary youth, there is the informer of the imperial court as well. Hearing the news of the attack led by Jellasics, the inhabitants of the villages pour into the national army, and Hajdú Gyurka also escapes from his landlord. Petőfi is there at the camp of the revolutionaries, raising them to enthusiasm with his poetry.

Yesterday

October, 1956. Colonel lieutenant Szabó sends a platoon with the mission of calming the people demonstrating in the town. The platoon is lined up under the command of Lieutenant Csendes and the soldiers aim at the demonstrators. Szusza Kis changes sides, and Csendes is unable to shoot at his childhood mate. They withdraw.

Danse Macabre

Viki

The ancient families of Kont and Hadhazy have long been at war with each other. Lord Cont is a supporter of Vienna's rule, while Hadhazy is a follower of the Hungarian revolutionary Kossuth. Lord plans to fight Hadhazy at an approaching county meeting. Vicky, the beautiful and savvy daughter of Hadhazy's family, just before this, returns home from a Swiss boarding school for young girls, expelled because of her behavior. Vicky, dressed in a man's costume, goes to defend her father and with the honor of a nobleman fights the young scion of a family hostile to her. The young man's name is Feri Kont, and he mistakes the young man's introduction to Vicky for her brother Kalman Hadhazy. The political conflicts between the two families are mitigated by love complications. A misunderstanding at a county ball is brought to light, and the two warring camps are reconciled through the love of Vicky and Feri.

Az ember néha téved

Often, poor girls are forced into arranged marriages. Even poor Anna is willing to marry István Pap, the ageing lawyer of the radio company, just to save her father's failing radio shop. The wealthy groom is not averse to marriage, and he emphasises his status with an engagement gift. But the platinum brooch disappears without a trace. It is snatched by a pickpocket, who sets off on a "ring wander..."

2x2 Are Sometimes 5

One of the most popular musical comedies of the 1950s starts with flirting between a bohemian sport pilot and a serious mathematics teacher. The lesson is that in life, not everything happens as would appear logical at the outset. In the wake of the inflexible and demagogic dramas of Stalinism, this colourful comedy was a true breath of fresh air. It is innovative not only for being full of great hits but also for being the first film in a very long time that was about pure love.

The Borrowed Castle

Among the Gruber family, the rumor spreads like wildfire that their wealthy American relative, Menyhért Gruber, is visiting Hungary with his daughter, Mary. Various plans are devised to exploit the rich relative. The boldest of them all is the plan of Bálint Koltay, who directly pursues Mary's hand. However, the young ones fall in love with each other so deeply that Bálint stands by Mary even when the "wealthy" Gruber informs him that he's bankrupt. At this point, the only thing left to arrange is for Bálint, who poses as a landowner, to actually present a noble castle to his future father-in-law.

The Sun Shines

The village is preparing for the celebration of Mihály Sámson's entry to the Vitéz Order. There's a great competition for roles in the amateur theatrical performance, and the choir is practicing. Two girls compete for the attention of Gyula Kopácsi, the railway traffic controller: Jolán, the postal clerk, and the pastor's daughter, Sárika. Jolán's mother spreads rumors during the rehearsal of the performance that Kopácsi has already proposed to her daughter, even though he's actually leaning towards Sárika. However, at the celebration, Sárika and Sámson notice each other...

Liberated Land

This Happened in Budapest

Pataky Elemér arrives in the capital as a victim in his niece's divorce case. Having to meet the lawyer dr. Orbói István is, however, an alibi in an effort to get away from his quarrelsome wife, and to have some fun at the same time. He takes the lawyer with him.

The Chequered Coat

Mrs. Takács, a widow and a postmistress living in the country, is about to marry her two daughters.

One Bad Egg

The hero of the story, Gyuszi Ádám, the Jómadár, a lawyer's clerk in Pest, returns home to his parents in Kőhegy, and disrupts the stale, uneventful life of the small town with his mere appearance. He decides to revive his father's dying law firm and marry his 23-year-old sister, who is rapidly approaching the age of the "fair maiden". He successfully carries out his plans, tidies up the office and marries Sárika to their neighbour, with whom she has been hopelessly in love since she was a little girl. But in the meantime, she too falls into the trap of love...

The American Cigarette

The satiric film is a dramatic-ironic picture of the Hungarian intellectuals in the seventies. Ebes, whose art has been awarded for its merits conglomerating folk features with modernity, can hardly believe that from his parents, old friends, and the sons of the people he did not even receive a telegram of congratulation.

Be True Until Death

The story follows the life of a bright and sensitive schoolboy growing up in an old, established boarding school in the city of Debrecen in eastern Hungary.

Gül Baba

Student Gábor and cigarette-smoking student Mujkó sneak into the Buda rose garden of baba Gül and fall in love with Leila, the daughter of baba Gül, who is bathing there and is destined to be the 33rd wife of Ali Basa. The guard captures the student and death awaits him and his companions.

Young Noszty and Mary Toth

Another winner from Hungarian director Ivan Szekely (aka S.K. Seeley and Steve Sekely), A Nosty fiu Esete Toth Marival was released in English-speaking regions as I Married for Love. Feri Noszty (Paul Javor) is a handsome but irresponsible Hussar officer who prefers a life of wine, women and song to his military responsibilities. Unwilling to bow to family pressure, Feri refuses to marry heiress Mary Toth (Eva Szorenyi) for her dowry alone. But Mary falls in love with the prideful Feri, and to win his affections she poses as her own poverty-stricken maid. Based on a novel by Kalman Mikszath, A Noszty Fiu Esete Toth Marival was filmed simultaneously in Hungarian- and German-language versions.

The Fanatics

Bene, tired of the professional battles of engineers and trying to escape a ship-wrecked marriage, asks to be transferred to the country. The gravest problem of the sandy region in Nagyalföld (Great Hungarian Plain) is the shortage of water. The tireless director of the local state farm asks for Bene's support, but the disillusioned man refuses him.

Three Nights of Love

A young man spends his last three nights with his lover before his army regiment is ordered to war. When he deserts his unit to return to her side, he discovers the woman he loves is gone, and he is interrogated by the police when he learns his lover is a communist agent. The two finally are reunited at the police station where the embarrassed man denies ever knowing the accused woman.

The Empire Gone With A Sneeze

The tyrannical king is afraid of his people. He can only find peace if everyone wishes him well when he sneezes. Catchpoles raid the country and give orders what the king wants.

At Midnight

On New Year's Eve in 1956 the artist couple, the actor János and the dancer Viki are hastily packing. While they are waiting for the car, which is to take them across the border, their entire life is replayed in front of their eyes.

The New Landlord

Az Uj Foldesur (The New Squire) was based on a novel by popular Hungarian author Maurice Jokal, whose many works had previously been largely ignored. After the wars of 1848, a retired Austrian army officer "returns to the soil" as a gentleman farmer in Hungary in the 1850s. The old campaigner is the father of two daughters: One of the girls comes to a sad end thanks to the malfeasances of a handsome spy, but the other has a happier fate when she falls in love with a Hungarian POW. The underlying theme is brotherhood, as the formerly warring Austrians and Hungarians at last find a common ground. Az Uj Foldesur was nearly twice as expensive as the average Hungarian film -- but at $40,000, its budget was a drop in the bucket compared to a typical Hollywood production.

Biting Husband

Péter Ilosvay and Lina Vásárhelyi are wife and husband, but don't come along with each other. After the divorce they go on living under the same roof for they are unable to agree on the common wealth.

Everybody Loves Someone Else

Gábor, a doctor, fights his own battle to improve the welfare and health of the village. In his fight he is assisted by sister Jolán, member of the green cross.

The Football Star

Cabinet crisis threatens in Futbólia, due to a series of lost matches. The head of state charges admiral Duca with the task, as a last chance, to get hold of the football star of the Hungarian team presently playing in Switzerland.

Szent Péter esernyője

Veronika, the niece of the parish priest of Glogova, came to the priesthood because of the death of her mother. While the priest was praying for a blessing in front of the cross in the field, a grey old man put an umbrella over the little girl. It is still believed in the village that St. Peter himself came to protect the little orphan from the rain. Years go by and Veronika grows up to be a beautiful girl, who falls in love with a law student from Pest, Gyuri Wibra. Interestingly enough, Gyuri - known to be the illegitimate son of the rich Gregorics - inherits only an umbrella from his father...

Merry-Go-Round

In a rural scenery in the throes of difficult changes lives a humble but promising young farmer girl called Mari Pataki. Her father forbids her from seeing the man she loves. The father, above all preoccupied by work on the fields and prospective wealth, decides to give his daughter in marriage to an old but rich man with whom he does business. Land marries land, he says. This seems to be the unyielding rule of the Hungarian peasantry. But the young lover is ready to stand up to any challenge to keep Maris love.

Gala Dinner

In Luxoria Prince Igor is preparing to accede to the throne and choose his wife on his 24th birthday. The mother Duchess's candidate is Duchess Xenia, but Igor loves Annie, the soap-maker's daughter.

Thirteen Girls Smile at the Sky

The landowner, János Karády, is knocked down and robbed on the highway. He comes to in the shabby clothes of one of the robbers. Thirteen pretty young girls take care of the young man thought to be a poor vagabond.

The Crucial Moment

Kulinyi, the theatre secretary in Budapest, becomes the director of a rural theatre. He takes with him a talented, budding theatre couple, Gábor Bálint and Éva Pap. He fights a hopeless battle with drunken and jaded actors, undemanding audiences, and demands the release of their untalented relatives with creditors. Finally, tired of failure, all three return to Pest. Kulinyi resumes his post as secretary. Gábor Bálint, out of options, approaches the famous actor Ferenc Tőrös and asks him to let him play the role for one night only, so that he can prove his talent.

Sweet and Bitter

Love Travelling a Coach

The top management of the co-operative in the rural community at Lake Balaton goes on coaches everywhere to irritate Mrs. Peczöli, the snobbish wife of the only individual farmer. Peczöli would readily join the co-operative, should it not oppose his apple improving experiments.

The Soil Under Your Feet

In 1905 Hungary, a young village woman has just undergone a marriage to the spoiled son of a man to whom her father is indebted, in order that the debt be cancelled, only to be spirited away by her true love, a young peasant, by whom she soon becomes pregnant. Together they attempt to find a way to buy up her father's debt and also pay for a divorce from her husband, against various odds.

Catherine' Marriage

Kis Katalin and Varga Jóska are getting married. During their honeymoon they are preparing plans for the future. Katalin, however, seems to lag behind both in her studies and the work competition, becoming a couch potato version of a wife. Jóska, instead of trying to help, does nothing else than his work.

Tüzkeresztség

This propaganda film from the early years of socialist transformation in Hungary depicts kulak sabotage in production cooperatives. The prosperous peasant Ignatz Hato, one of the best farmers in the village, joins the Two Octobers cooperative, and soon all the small peasants follow him. The village rich, led by Lili Sohar, watching the great expansion of the cooperative, try to break up the cooperators with each other. Sohar's attempt bears fruit and Hato leaves the cooperative. Next, Lili Sohar tries to convince Ignatz Hato that she is planning to create a rival team of new rich people and urges him to join her. Ignatz refuses and does not give in to the blackmail. Lili's lover, a former gendarme, shoots party secretary Bozhine. At the wounded Božine's bedside, Ignác admits his mistake and asks to be accepted back into the cooperative. Sándor, the president of the cooperative, realizes that the collective should not prevent those who want to work honestly from joining.

The bridge of life

The war is over, but the Bodog family is starving. Varg's neighbor takes Mihai Bodog with him to do restoration work. They are well paid for this work and Mihai can finally please his wife Erji and their young son. When the workers are later hired to build a bridge, Bodog, a specialist bridge builder, cannot resist the challenge and is hired. But this time the workers are delayed in paying their wages, so their family is once again in need. Erji is forced to look for work...

Spring Shower

It tells the story of Marie, an austerely beautiful young peasant girl played by the French star, Annabella. She is seduced beneath a flowering tree by the admirer of one of the daughters of the prosperous family for whom she works, becomes pregnant and is cast out.

Pillar of Salt

In 1944, Feri Margittai escapes from the front, but his mother sends him away from home.

Pár lépés a határ

Based on the novel of the same name by Lajos Meszterházy about the escape from prison of two communists sentenced to death. The movie is set in 1921, two years after the defeat of the Hungarian Soviet Republic.

Vision by the Lake

Nothing new under the sun. The famous 'Love Story' is only a faint reminder of the most successful pre-war Hungarian film. The relationship between the painter and the busy girl, as well as the third one, still holds surprises for us today.

Nászinduló

Years later, the memory of their first, unfulfilled love still haunts Miklós, a once poor schoolboy, and Eva, the mayor's daughter, separated by social barriers in the past and family ties today.

Szerencsés flótás

A beautiful and comfortable castle, somewhere in the countryside, in Hungary in the 1930s. The inhabitants of the castle have no idea how to escape their boredom, especially Miss Klári. The two burglars sneaking up on her are just what her courtiers need. They decide not to show their faces, but grant the burglars' every wish. To add to the fun, later on, the inhabitants of the house themselves appear in the drawing room dressed as burglars...

Sleepless Years

The "sleepless years" in this propaganda piece by director Felix Marlassy occur on Csepel Island, an island south of Budapest that is home to an armaments factory. The factory workers are shown being exploited by imperialists, capitalists gone berserk, and fascists, more or less in that exact chronological sequence. The heavy-handed approach does much to undercut the belief that when socialism finally takes over, the lives of the workers are brought up to a human level. In this instance, audiences might prefer a more nuanced and subtle statement, no matter what the message.

Crime at Dawn

Private inspector Hável happens to travel on the train which is attacked at Biatorbágy. His attention is drawn to a suspicious man, and in the next few days he confirms that it was indeed him who committed the crime. Yet the police accuses not the lunatic Marschalkó but the communists. Summary justice is declared.

Három csillag

The film consists of 3 novellas. 1. On the eve of the Soviet advance into Hungary, workers at a military plant risk everything to strike in defiance, displaying unwavering courage and solidarity. 2. During a fierce battle, three Soviet soldiers shelter in a peasant’s hut where a dying mother begs them to baptize her newborn - an act of compassion they fulfill, leaving behind three stars from their caps as a lasting gift. 3. After liberating a Hungarian town, Soviet troops rescue a hidden throng of civilians, huddled in underground tunnels, from imminent Nazi brutality, saving countless lives in the process.

Club Seven

In a small town in the countryside, the election of the president of the restaurant trade association is under way. The two rivals, Dénes Kövi, owner of the elegant Korona restaurant, and Antal Bálint, owner of the staid Makkhetes restaurant, are putting all their eggs in the basket for the title. Taking advantage of this situation, Pál Balázs, who has become the manager of his crippled painter friend, has a portrait commissioned with Dénes Kövi.

Budapest Pastry Shop

Ilonka, daughter of a former landowner, is a shop-assistant in her father's small pastry shop in Buda. In order to get a job for her fiancé, who is a young doctor, she befriends János, a painter and owner of the house.
